Details of the First Aid at Work course:
Although this course is titled First Aid at Work; it does not only apply to workplace situations and can be used in everyday life.
By the end of this course, everyone who attends will have the understanding and skills to apply first aid treatment to casualties with confidence in a prompt, safe and effective manner.
When you have successfully completed this course, you will be awarded with a national vocational qualification. This will be First Aid at Work – FAA Level 6.
How long is this course?
This is a 3-day course with typically a 1-hour break for lunch and 2 15-minute breaks each day. To successfully complete this course, you must attend all 3 days.
Course content:
This course covers the following subjects:
- Legalities, responsibilities & reporting
- Dealing with an unresponsive casualty
- Fractures & spinal injuries
- Control of bleeding
- Poisoning
- Burns
- Epilepsy
- Resuscitation & AED awareness
- Bandaging
- Heart attacks
- Head injuries
- Chest injuries
- Asthma
- Stroke
- Assessment of the situation
- Shock (including anaphylaxis)
- Choking
- Eye injuries
- Sprains & strains
- Diabetes
How will you be assessed?
During this course, there will be ongoing practical assessments by the instructor and a written assessment.
Once you have demonstrated an understanding of the course content and the practical elements effectively to the instructor and past the written assessment, you will have completed the First Aid at Work qualification and this will be valid for 3 years.
Do you need to do any refreshers after the course?
Although it is not required, the Health and Safety Executive does strongly recommend that any individual who completes a first aid course should refresh their skills each year.
Depending on your reason for attending this course, you may not continually apply first aid, therefore skills can deteriorate if they are not used.
If you do decide to complete an annual refresher course, the duration of this would be 3 hours.
How many people can attend each course?
Each First Aid at Work course can have a maximum of 12 students.
Is there an age limit to attend this course?
Each student needs to be at least 14 years old or over.
However, you have to be aware that a student cannot assume any responsibility within the workplace until they are 16 years old and the employer has a responsibility to ensure that the student is suitable to undertake this role.
